By happy coincidence the sun came out this week at the same time I was able to spend some time in the garden. Bulb planting has been the priority since they’ve been sitting in the barn waiting for less wet and cold weather.
Mason wanted to help – but I told him he must first learn all the Latin names of the bulbs. Our brainy basset was definitely up for that. He dashed for the bulb catalogue and was rattling off the bulb identities like a gardening pro.
He got this one straight away – everyone knows that Galanthus Ikariae Latifolius is Snowdrop. Right?
What about this one?
That’s right – they are crocus bulbs. Worryingly they are already growing in the bag.
And these?
These bulbs are in the special category in the catalogue. Ixia viridiflora, they are originally from South Africa.
I could go on but I won’t as I’ve got a lousy cold, cough and sore throat and bulb identification lessons is beyond my thinking capability right now. Suffice to say that I’ve planted lots of bulbs. To be precise:
110 daffodils
110 tulips
100 crocuses
50 iris
10 ixia viridiflora
20 snowdrops
And if that little lot doesn’t give us a splash of spring colour I’m not sure what will. I’m looking forward to it already. It may not be 1,000 flowers yet but give us time. It will be wonderful to see spring flowers coming up under all our trees and in the flower beds.
Just hope the snowdrops don’t come and go whilst I’m away in the UK. That will be just my luck!
WHAT WE WERE DOING……
I recognised the crocuses, do I get a prize? Hope you feel better soon.
Oh my, that’s so many bulbs! It’s going to be stunning at your place come Spring/Summer! I shall have to drop by to admire them – perhaps you’ll open for afternoon tea to paying guests soon – or you could say – afternoon tea for free in return for some hard graft helping out in the garden!
On another note, I do hope you feel better really soon. So sorry to hear you are unwell. Best wishes, Sarah x
