It’s not quite an Indian summer but we’ve been enjoying three consecutive days of sunshine. Wonderful weather for topping up the potager.
I’m so excited by the fennel right now. It’s growing bigger and stronger every day. Harvest is only days away. Can’t wait for that subtle taste. Having said that it does bring back memories of pernod promotion nights at the students’ union when I worked behind the bars. Pernod and black, hmm, can smell and taste it now!
Back in the real world I’ll have to make do with sniffing these fennel plants. I grew these beauties from seed. I feel so proud that they’ve grown so big and strong.
It’s a tough call because the broad beans are shooting up their poles.  A few of the plants have little flowers coming through which can only be a good sign.
The snow peas are a bit slower to start but now romping their way up their canes.
Not to be outdone the tomatoes are still battling for sunlight. I gather up a pocket full each night on the way back from putting the chickens to bed and before I water the veges.
Look a complete salad waiting to be picked!
These have some way to go but the onions seem to be putting their roots down and starting to grow strongly.
Here’s a miscellany of new and established residents to the potager.
Top – spinach seedlings, leaks almost ready to harvest, celery looking very squat but growing in the centre
Bottom – mini cabbage, new bok choi seedlings and new cauliflower plant
And here’s something that I’ve not yet decided where it should be located as this is a perennial. One of my favourites – Rhubarb.
Now not that I’m competitive or anything with my mother-in-law but she’s just planted some out in her new garden. So let the battle of the rhubarb begin.
Oh and before you get any ideas Sheila, it’s against the rules to get consultancy from Grandad. I’ll be checking on you with Auntie June – she’ll tell me if you’re up to no good!
As a person new to gardening, I need all the help and advice I can get!! Garden magazines have taken over from golf magazines. Have promised rhubarb crumble to my consultants when it is ready. Sorry to have to bend the rules a bit this year.
That is brilliant! A war from one side of the world to another! Good luck to you both, Julie your potager is just stunning x
