It’s a sure sign of neglect in the garden when things start to go to seed. I can’t help myself though as the seed heads are a work of art which I find brings character to the garden. Well that’s my story and I’m sticking to it! My first crop of red onions are “blooming” bringing a modernist look to the vegetable beds. They are like garden jewels to be treasured and admired.
It’s crazy in the kitchen garden right now. Other priorities have kept me away so things have gone a bit rampant, especially the birds who are eyeing up the soft fruits. After a spot of emergency engineering with bird netting we now have some cages around the fruit so hopefully we’ll be enjoying our first home grown strawberries on Christmas Day. Not to mention the peas, purple sprouting broccoli, cabbages which are blossoming right now. I spied our first courgette last night so it won’t be long before we’ll be inundated with Fortnum’s favourite snack.
Just a couple more days of being an executive and then I can kick back and bring some order from the garden chaos. I think it’s only right that my in-laws have a few days to settle in before we put them to serious work!
