Our fruit bushes have been an abysmal failure. Our flop crop in gardening parlance. There is a single reason for this dreadful state of affairs.
They come with fluffy white tails and have the capability to sit very still when two basset hounds are surveying the garden. Yes, our local bunnies have been running rampage with our fruit bushes. And that’s after we put up bunny fences.
This is the sole fruit this year – a couple of raspberries. This is not going to make my pavlova shine this year.
In the overall scheme of things it’s not a total disaster just a disappointment. I fear that fruit growing is going to be a challenge for us until such times that we have our kitchen garden established so closer to the bushes and able to supervise them more closely.
The blueberry was almost a gonna. But it managed to resurrect itself. Being chomped to a stump didn’t do much for it’s well being but I have high hopes now we have reinforced the bunny fencing.
I fear the worst for the blackberry which started in such a promise. Good job there are plenty of hedgerow blackberries to keep us going.
The gooseberry hasn’t faired much better. It flourished and then seemed to flop. And that despite their spiny, spikey, spiteful thorns.
The redcurrant has faired better but no fruit to speak of.
It’s fair to say that the raspberries have been the most robust and seem to have settled in well. No fruit but they are showing signs of possibilities for next year.
I’m trying not to get downhearted by our flop crop but it’s a shame as it would have been nice to be able to enjoy our own fruits this year. There were such high hopes when we planted them out.
But there is always next year to see what it might bring.   Bunnies permitting that is!
It’s only the first year so I wouldn’t be too worried. Think of it as natural pruning. Are you sure it’s only bunnies ? I have to fight off the birds from my raspberries and blackcurrants because the bushes aren’t netted over. I usually get sufficient raspberries to put a handful on my cereal each morning but there are always enough blackcurrants from 4 bushes for crumbles or even jam.
Hi Ruta, not this is definitely rabbits eating the leaves, we never got as far as fruit! JT
Your raspberries should bear next year for sure and even more the year after that, Julie, so take heart!
Ah you cant help the forces of nature sadly so dont feel too down about it. You have had massive success with your potager – that alone is worthy of a big shiny trophy. At least next year you will know what to do before those pesky wabbits come along xx
