With all the rotten weather the chickens deserved a treat. To make them feel better about the wet and cold I did chicken house spring cleaning today. This involves a fair amount of effort to make sure all the waste is removed and the inside of the chicken house brushed out. You wouldn’t believe how much waste material four chickens would produce!Â
Anyway, chicken waste is very important. It’s perfect for composting and will contribute to the future fertility of the garden when we start to spread our compost later in the year. That of course requires us to construct out compost bins which I’m ashamed to say are still waiting to be done. Well a girl has had too many other priorities and would have been done this weekend had the weather not been so awful.
I’m pretty sure that George and the girls appreciated the spring clean. They were back in their house as soon as I’d left the run making themselves at home on their roost and fighting their way to the best place to make them self comfy for the night.
Some people have suggested that chicken blogging is not quite as cute as basset blogging. I have to disagree so here’s some chicken blogging from today. If you’re a bit squeemish you should be warned about a photo to come demonstrating the fruits of the chickens digestive labour.

Back in their clean chook house
Shuffle up George, their’s plenty of room for all of us!
That’s one heck of a chook house! I grew up with chickens (well I grew up with my parents and we had chickens!!) and so I know the hard work that goes in. I must say though our chickens always took that one step further and became dinner!!

Hey Julie, Those grateful hens ought to be providing you with some damn fine eggs!
Just picked up the new blog on holiday: like the new setting – which of the hounds posed for the pix?! The rain seems a long way off reading it in 32 degrees of Cretan sunshine. On the other hand we’re staying in a villa that was built into bare hillside three years ago so there’s a lot of parallels with your house building story….
Now must have a look at the Darzi website and see what DH have finally published! Be in touch again when I get home. love Gill x
I keep telling myself that the eggs and compost will be worth the chicken house keeping!
