This time last week was the first day of Spring.  Not my declaration of wishful thinking but the official first day of Spring in New Zealand.  I love the definition that Spring is here – just as well really because it couldn’t have been more spring like on the first day of Spring!

So what does Spring mean to you?

For us in Mahia it was the kind of Spring day I dream about in the depths of winter.  A spring day where the birds are singing and the air is crystal clear.  Oh yes, with a touch of spring sunshine to top it all off.  It was definitely Spring in Mahia by any one’s definition.

It was positively balmy when I ventured onto the veranda at 0700.  So wrapped up in our PJs we hunkered down to watch the sun shimmering on the sea.  It was an amazing panorama – the sea, land and light was raw and beautiful.  Kind of poetic eh!

It’s fair to say it was a lazy start to this Spring day but it wasn’t long before we were off on what became a joyful, soulful stroll.  The farm was positively buzzing with Spring like activity.  Lambs were frolicking in the fields.  Goats and sheep were grazing lazily and we passed untold numbers of new life – kids, lambs, calves – and not to mention the trees springing into Spring colour.

It was a truly fantastic start to a Spring break.  The bassets were in basset heaven acquainting themselves with every blade of grass, cow pat, sheep dung and goat poo.  Oh deep joy!

What’s your Spring like – here’s what mine was like here in New Zealand.

What every discerning person has for their Spring celebration lunch – Cray fish fresh from the river!  Lucky me I was away with a recovering vegetarian who wasn’t sure about this new adventure into seafood!
